The Greeks also thought of the Sphinx as a kind of Underworld demon. Media reports in the 1930s described subterranean chambers and passageways located between the Temple of the Solar-men located on the plateau and the temple of the Sphinx in the Giza Valley. The site includes a variety of images, including one by Maxime du Camp of a Sphinx covered mostly in sand in 1849, as well as light shows from the early twentieth century to today. To avoid splitting the stone, it must be carefully and precisely cut to the proper size and then carefully placed. The kings head is on a smaller scale than the body. The necropolis at Giza is also not the only pyramid complex - there are others not far away, like the Abu Sir, Saqqara, and Dahshur pyramid complexes. Great Sphinx of Giza | Description, History, & Facts | Britannica The answer is "day and night" (both words and, respectivelyare feminine in Ancient Greek). An alternative version tells that she devoured herself. Oedipus solved the riddle by answering: "Manwho crawls on all fours as a baby, then walks on two feet as an adult, and then uses a walking stick in old age". She strangled and devoured anyone who could not answer. It was likely carved around 2500 BC, and it bears a striking resemblance to the Pharaoh KhaFRA, according to archeologists. Sphnx) from the Greek verb (sphng, to bind). The Sphinx was a hybrid creature of Greek, Egyptian, and Mesopotamian lore, usually represented as part human and part lion. The mortuary temple at the pyramid base was more complex than that of Khufu and was filled with statuary of the kingover 52 life-size or larger images originally filled the structure. Pyramids were not only a source of food for builders, but also a source of sustenance for the laborers who built them. Some recent contacts have told me that they are not being allowed by the army to walk up to the Sphinx and explore the surrounding ruins, with the excuse that it could endanger these natural formations. She would sit in her lair outside the city, present her riddle to travelers and passers-by, and kill and devour those who failed to answer correctly. 25582532 BCE), whom it was said to represent. However, depictions of the sphinx are generally associated with grand architectural structures, such as royal tombs or religious temples. In Jean Cocteaus play The Infernal Machine (1934), the Sphinx actually gives Oedipus the answer to her riddle so she can finally stop killing and end her own life. Lets look at the elevated platform on top of which the Sphinx is located. In ancient Egypt, there was a monument to the Pharaohs known as the Sphinx. The Great Sphinx of Giza is one of the great monuments that one should learn about to understand the Great Pyramids of Giza and get the most out of one's trip. These are known to us today only in summary form from various scattered sources. and he has been featured on podcasts, interviews and online conferences organized by Earth Ancients, Portal to Ascension, OSOM, Watcher's Talk, Times FM and others. At the end of the Old Kingdom, a statue began to fade into the desert background. Whenever someone failed to answer the riddle correctly, the Sphinx would kill and devour them. WebLocation: Giza Necropolis, Al Giza Desert, Giza Governorate, Egypt. Sphinxes were popular in Greek art from as early as the Bronze Age. "Remarks on the pre-Aksumite period in northern Ethiopia.". Pliny the Elder mentions that Ethiopia produces plenty of sphinxes, with brown hair and breasts, corroborated by 20th-century archeologists. , In another version, Sphinx was the name of one of King Laius many illegitimate children. The Sphinx of Memphis is nearly as large as the Great Sphinx of Giza, which measures 8 m (26 feet) in length and stands 4 m (13 feet) tall. Its primary inspiration was likely the Egyptian sphinx. Its a possibility that cannot be ruled out. The earliest artistic depictions of "sphinxes" from the South Asian subcontinent are to some extent influenced by Hellenistic art and writings. If this was solely the work of nature then why would be restricted to a specific area? Chicago: University of Chicago Press, 2013. The Sphinx is home to a number of tunnels and passages. Some were created by treasure hunters, others by people re-carving the Sphinx, and others are unknown. The most significant variation is the Boeotian (Phx), employed, for example, by the great Boeotian poet Hesiod in his Theogony. The granite sphinx statue at the Metropolitan Museum of Art is one of many examples of sphinxes that depict Hatshepsut. We remain convinced that if he had met a real child, she would never have survived. As a nurse, I was thinking: “Has he got HIV?” I was also thinking about my daughter, who was watching on Facebook with other COP page followers (there are more than 90,000). When he finally released my finger, it was flapping in the air with blood pouring out. I was trying breakaway techniques I’d learned at work, but he would not let go. I realised my finger was trapped in his mouth. Once he realised he wasn’t going to be able to run away, he started violently lashing out, so we restrained him. We said we were performing a section 24 citizen’s arrest – the law that allows store detectives to hold suspects until the police arrive. He arrived and the team identified him from his Facebook photo and stopped him in the ticket hall. I was part of a security team of seven, rather than the usual three or four. As I travelled down with another member of the team, I was apprehensive. On this occasion, last April, he had arranged to meet someone he thought was a 14-year-old girl at Stevenage train station. Thomas Jean De-Castle-Lynne, who was 46, stood out because of the way he spoke to the decoys. A risk assessment is made and a plan devised by whichever group is taking the lead. There will be a discussion about whether it will be a sting in a public place, or a knock on the door. Take my word for it: it’s not just a few weird men on social media, it’s an epidemic.Ī sting takes place when the predator has either arranged to meet the decoy or his online behaviour has given serious cause for concern. Some of the things that were said, and the images sent to her, were just awful. Within minutes, she was inundated with friend requests from older men (it’s the men who have to make first contact to avoid claims of entrapment). She agreed to be a decoy and set up a Facebook account as an underage girl. Rebecca was dubious about me getting involved but, as she learned more, she became interested. The next thing I knew I had agreed to join a “sting”. I had a phone interview and they made sure I had no criminal record (as a nurse, I am DBS-checked annually). I followed them on Facebook and in March last year sent a message to the guy who ran it. They are decent, ordinary men and women with regular jobs. 2022 seems pretty exciting already.Although Cinebench R23 refers to the two tests as 'single-core' and 'multi-core', we refer to them as 'single-thread' and 'multi-thread'. Thus, we may once again see alternating leadership in mobile between Intel and AMD, which is ultimately good for the end-user. Ryzen 7000 mobile will include Phoenix-H 45 W (up to 8C/16T) and Raphael-H 45 W+ (up to 16C/32T) offerings slated to arrive in late 2022. The move from Zen 3 to Zen 3+ or Zen 3D will bring in palpable performance boosts surely, but will it be enough to eclipse Alder Lake mobile remains an intriguing question.įrom what we've been hearing so far, the real competition begins with Ryzen 7000 Zen 4. We hear Rembrandt is already in mass production and that it will use 6 nm Zen 3+ cores with support for PCIe Gen 4, DDR5, LPDDR5, and integrated RDNA 2 graphics. That being said, we can still wear the tinfoil hat to get an idea of what to expect in the coming months.ĪMD's successor to Cezanne will be Ryzen 6000 Rembrandt APUs that are slated to arrive sometime in early 2022. We do not know any specifications about these processors yet save for the core counts and possible TDP configuration, so it's hard to infer things holistically right now. That being said, the data we've been seeing so far from this source and also from the rumor mill around the web are telltale signs that Intel will likely beat AMD Cezanne by a sizeable margin in raw performance with Alder Lake mobile. This naturally means significant performance boosts over Tiger Lake-H and accordingly, we see the pre-sample scores being 52% faster than the Core i9-11950H.Īll said and done, a leak is still unofficial information so readers should take them with some skepticism. This is not only 47% faster than the Ryzen 9 5900HX but also 49% faster than the M1 Max. The Core i7-12700H pre-sample seems to have amassed 18,501 points in Cinebench R23 multi. We do not have single-core scores yet, but the multi-core performance seems to be quite impressive. This is in-line with the previous closed Geekbench leak that showed the Core i9-12900HK to be 61.3% faster than the Ryzen 9 5980HX in Geekbench.Ĭompared to Tiger Lake-H Core i9-11950H average, the pre-sample Core i7-12700H is about 53% while the performance delta further increases to 82% against an average Core i9-10980HK.Ĭinebench R23 is an interesting benchmark since it is also natively available for Apple M1 SoCs, which have been making headlines for their superlative performance and efficiency. This is a whopping 47% faster than the average AMD Ryzen 9 5900HX. Comparing the Cinebench R20 single scores, we see that our pre-sample leak with a score of 689 points is about 12% faster than the average Core i9-11950H and 21% faster than AMD's current top dog in mobile, the Ryzen 9 5900HX average.Ĭinebench R20 multi sees the Core i7-12700H in the pre-sample putting up an impressive show with 7158 points. Intel seems to have further improved single-thread performance in Alder Lake-P. Therefore, it is quite safe to assume that our sources could have indeed stumbled upon an upcoming GE76 Raider based on the Core i7-12700H. The GE76 Raider is MSI's flagship gaming laptop series, so it is very well possible that the company has already begun testing multiple Alder Lake-P-based SKUs. Thus, it is becoming increasingly evident that the "17K4" in this Core i9-12900HK leak is indicative of an upcoming MSI GE76 Raider device. In fact, the MSI GE76 Raider 11UH that we had reviewed had the BIOS version E17K3IMS.113 while the GE76 Raider 10UH before it carried the E17K2IMS.109 version. This a BIOS naming convention characteristic of MSI laptops. These scores were from a closed test, and the benchmark entry indicated a BIOS name that goes like E17K4IMS.013. The other, more convincing evidence comes from a Geekbench leak of the Core i9-12900HK that we had reported on recently (via Wccftech). Here, we see that the Cinebench window is partially eclipsing what is clearly an MSI logo. The first clue that we could be looking at an MSI laptop comes from the picture of this leak itself (see below). Our sources did not mention the exact origin of the scores, but we can probably hazard an informed guess that the Core i7-12700H leak we have with us is indeed from an upcoming MSI GE76 Raider 12UH (?) device. One whole grapefruit, or a glass of 200 ml (7 US fl oz) of grapefruit juice may cause drug overdose toxicity. Each affected drug has either a specific increase of effect or decrease. If the drug is not absorbed, then not enough of it is in the blood to have a therapeutic effect. The other effect is that grapefruit can block the absorption of drugs in the intestine. On the other hand, some drugs must be broken down to become active, and inhibiting CYP3A4 may lead to reduced drug effects. If the drug's breakdown for removal is lessened, then the level of the drug in the blood may become too high or stay too long, leading to adverse effects. The action of the CYP3A4 enzyme itself is to metabolize many medications. Furanocoumarins inhibit the CYP3A4 enzyme, including the P450 enzyme family responsible for metabolizing 90% of drugs. In the first, the effect is from natural furanocoumarins such as bergamottin and 6',7'-dihydroxybergamottin, which occur in both grapefruit flesh and peel. Grapefruit and grapefruit juice have been found to interact with numerous drugs and in many cases, to result in adverse direct and/or side effects (if dosage is not carefully adjusted). Main article: Grapefruit–drug interactions Grapefruit mercaptan, a sulfur-containing terpene, is one of the aroma compounds influencing taste and odor of grapefruit, compared with other citrus fruits. Flavors range from highly acidic and somewhat sour to sweet and tart, resulting from composition of sugars (mainly sucrose), organic acids (mainly citric acid), and monoterpenes and sesquiterpenes providing aromas. Common varieties are yellow and pink pulp colors. Grapefruit varieties are differentiated by the flesh color of fruit they produce. In Haiti, grapefruit is used primarily for its juice ( jus de Chadèque), but also is used to make jam ( confiture de Chadèque). In Costa Rica, especially in Atenas, grapefruit are often cooked to remove their sourness, rendering them as sweets they are also stuffed with dulce de leche, resulting in a dessert called toronja rellena (stuffed grapefruit). Grapefruit juice contains about half the citric acid of lime or lemon juice, and about 50% more citric acid than orange juice. In a 100 gram reference amount, raw grapefruit provides 33 kilocalories and is a rich source of vitamin C (40% of the Daily Value), with no other micronutrients in significant content. Raw grapefruit is 90% water, 8% carbohydrates, 1% protein, and negligible fat (table). †Percentages are roughly approximated using US recommendations for adults. Nutrition Grapefruit, raw, white, all areas Nutritional value per 100 g (3.5 oz) Developed from an irradiated 'Hudson' grapefruit ('Hudson' being a limb sport of 'Foster', itself a limb sport of the 'Walters'), it has found limited commercial success because it is more difficult to grow than other varieties. The 'Star Ruby' is the darkest of the red varieties. Its improved attributes of mutant variety are fruit and juice color, deeper red, and wide adaptation. The 'Rio Red' is a mutation-bred variety that was developed by treatment of bud sticks with thermal neutrons. The 'Rio Red' variety is a 2007 Texas grapefruit with registered trademarks Rio Star and Ruby-Sweet, also sometimes promoted as Reddest and Texas Choice. Using radiation to trigger mutations, new varieties were developed to retain the red tones that typically faded to pink. The Texas Legislature designated this grapefruit variety the official "State Fruit of Texas" in 1993. The 'Thompson' was a limb sport from a 'Marsh' grapefruit selected in 1913. It was a limb sport of a 'Thompson' grapefruit selected by A.E. The 1929 'Ruby Red' (or 'Redblush') patent was associated with real commercial success, which came after the discovery of a red grapefruit growing on a pink variety. This parasitism has led to millions in economic costs for nations in Central America and southern North America. The larvae of these flies then consume the fruit to gain nutrients until they can proceed into the pupae stage. suspensa, which lay their eggs in overripe or spoiled grapefruits. Grapefruits are one of the most common hosts for fruit flies such as A. 'Ruby Red' (of the 'Redblush' variety) was the first grapefruit patent. Its flesh is segmented and acidic, varying in color depending on the cultivars, which include white, pink, and red pulps of varying sweetness (generally, the redder varieties are the sweetest). The fruit is yellow-orange skinned and generally an oblate spheroid in shape it ranges in diameter from 10 to 15 cm (3.9 to 5.9 in). They produce 5 cm (2 in) white four-petaled flowers. The leaves are long (up to 15 cm (5.9 in)), thin, glossy, and dark green. The evergreen grapefruit trees usually grow to around 5–6 m (16–20 ft) tall, although they may reach 13–15 m (43–49 ft). This paper describes a game localization teaching experience at the undergraduate level with special focus on how to handle the linguistic assets of the online race game SuperTuxKart, while trying to shed some light on potential translation requirements of entertainment software and its incorporation into translation programs. Designing a video game localization course in translation undergraduate programs in public universities is a complex task in today’s reality, particularly due to limited access to free and authentic materials. Despite the significant growth of the game localization industry in the past years, translation undergraduate curricula in Brazil still lacks formal training in game localization, often leaving novice translators no alternative but to search for the required skills informally in game translation communities. Contaminated recycling is currently costing the City millions annually. How bad? Bad enough that it can damage equipment, cause workplace injuries at the recycling facility and ruin otherwise perfectly good recyclables. Why is it important to recycle right?īad things happen when the wrong items are placed in the Blue Bin. However, there is still the issue of a lot of material being put into Blue Bins that shouldn’t be (items not accepted in the recycling program). accepted in the program) are recovered and shipped to markets to be made into something new. The majority of the items (87% in 2021) put in the Blue Bin that are supposed to be there (i.e. The City’s recycling rates overall and for plastics are actually quite high. While recycling rates vary across different sectors, it’s important to note that residential recycling rates are typically much higher than those in the industrial, institutional and commercial sector. Some statistics circulating over the past few years suggest that nothing actually gets recycled, and that plastics in particular have very low recycling rates. Last year, 100,939 tonnes of recycling collected through the Blue Bin program was sold to markets to be made into something new. The City manages recycling from all single-family homes, about 60 per cent of the multi-residential sector and a limited number of non-residential establishments, such as small businesses. How much of what is collected in the City’s recycling program gets shipped to market? Only a small portion of the City’s recycling (about 14% in 2021) goes overseas and when it does, it is done through reputable brokers to ensure it is being recycled. The majority of the material from the City’s Blue Bins (approximately 86% in 2021) goes to markets in Canada and the U.S. The City is fortunate to have access to a lot of domestic recycling markets and is still able to sell its material to be made into something new. If you’re wondering if it’s still worth it to recycle, it is, and it’s increasingly important to recycle right. Despite changes in global recycling markets that have resulted in an oversupply of recycling material, with fewer markets where some materials can be sold, the City of Toronto’s Blue Bin recycling program remains strong. Recycling helps to conserve natural resources, keep waste out of landfill and reduce energy use and greenhouse gas emissions. Why It’s Worth It to Recycle and Important to Recycle Right When in doubt about how to properly dispose of something, ask the Waste Wizard. Find out what is and isn’t accepted in the City’s recycling program below. See our contact info at the bottom of the page. If you have any questions, we are always happy to help.
